Dropped-Objects Prevention Scheme (DROPS)

The Dropped-Objects Survey consists of the following two aspects:
  • a review of the Dropped-Objects Management System
  • a visual inspection of derrick, the drilling substructure and all derrick-mounted equipment

The inspections are carried out with reference to the relevant inspection program for drilling structures and travelling equipment. The detailed report contains recommendations that are rated according to severity levels (critical, major and minor). The Equipment Rating (ER) is also included in the report. All the surveys are carried out according to the predefined checklist from the client or according to our checklists. The elements of the dropped-objects survey include the following aspects:

  • evaluation of contractor’s methodology for reducing the risks of dropped objects
  • workgroups
  • identification of problems
  • inspection program
  • examination procedures
  • means of continuous improvement, etc.
  • derrick hand tool logbook
  • training of personnel
  • awareness campaigns
  • inclusion in toolbox talks, work permits, safety meetings, etc.
  • poster campaigns
  • inventory of derrick/mast equipment
  • securing methods identification
  • control of manufacturers' bulletins and alerts
  • risk assessments for dropped objects
  • maintenance procedures
  • records of modifications
  • control of third-party equipment in the derrick/mast
  • control of use of air hoists, operating procedures, etc.
  • continuous improvement of control methods
  • incident reports
  • derrick and substructure evaluated as eight separate areas
  • identification of redundant equipment
  • identification of risks associated with derrick/mast equipment (categorized as high-, medium- or low-risk equipment)
  • zone management and collision management

This review includes:

  • a review of all potential dropped objects
  • design documentation: calculations, drawings, etc.
  • calculations of static and dynamic loading
  • load test certificates
  • third-party inspection reports
  • material specification of structure and fastenings
  • rotary alignment calculations
  • proof of alignment of dolly tracks/rails incident reports, etc.
  • planned maintenance procedures and history reports
  • inspection reports of previous derrick inspections
  • documentation/certification of derrick-mounted equipment
  • fastenings (bolting and clamps)
  • stabbing board: load test, third-party inspections, certification of wire/chain, etc.
  • air hoists
  • deadline stabilizers, wire roller guides, Top Drive, hook, swivel, travelling block and dolly, crown block, Geolograph wire and fittings, etc.
  • MPI of lifting gear and structure and derrick-mounted equipment, shackles, turn-buckles, pad eyes, equipment mountings, slings, safety belts, sheave blocks, inertia reels, derrickman’s escape devices, etc.
